Following a summer series of over 50 free to enter qualifying events and 10 Grand Finals, we’re delighted to have crowned our Champions for 2017. Thousands of the U.K.’s golfers have been competing for the right to call themselves American Golf National Champions, along with prizes including qualification for the Heritage Resorts Tournament of Champions in Mauritius. Now the dust has settled and the trophies are taking pride of place at winners’ homes, we reflect on a summer of fantastic golf, incredible sportsmanship and ten sets of worthy winners!
9 HOLE PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP

The pairs competition saw Paul Hutton and Howard Burton from Wortley Golf Club claim their win with victory over Fulford Heath’s Ross Holmes and Scott Nixon, despite Scott scoring a Hole in One! It was a tight match all the way round with Hutton reflecting after the win, “The guys we were playing got a hole in one when we were one up and it changed the game. It was ebbing and flowing and there was only one hole in it, but we managed to get one up at the right time!” Check out the highlights including the thrilling finish on Sky Sports 4 on 5th December and on this page shortly after.

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

The Junior Championship lived up to expectations with some incredible golf played at Gainsborough G.C. 10 year old Aaron Mohun from Chester took the overall American Golf Junior Championship scoring 41 stableford points to win the overall title and the Boys Handicap category by one shot. It was Aaron’s 3rd time in the final and he was determined to get over the line this time, ““It was third time lucky for me today and I have loved every minute of it,” he said. “I made some good shot choices on the course and it really paid off.” Watch Aaron and our other wonderful winners in Girls, Scratch and Future Stars categories on Sky Sports 4 on 17th October and on this page shortly after.

LONG DRIVE CHAMPIONSHIP

Dan Konyk (Under 45), Ilona Stubley (Ladies) and Charles Seo (Over 45) were ultimately crowned champions, but the story of how they got there was filled with surprises, upsets, new talent. Sit back and enjoy as 400yard drives pepper the fairway in one of the most competitive long drive events ever seen. SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

The Senior Championship saw returning champions Martin Leo of Golf at Goodwood and Ian Hendry of Bognor Regis G.C. take the title for the second year running. The Sussex pairing won 3 & 2 from Niall McDonnell and John Greer of Ballinascorney and Newlands Golf Clubs. After their win, Ian admitted that his playing partner shouldered much of the responsibility for their win commenting, “I’m dreading the TV highlights, because how they could possibly edit out all of my shots. But I did have the winning putt, that’s the most important thing!”

LADIES CHAMPIONSHIP
The Ladies’ Championship saw the most emphatic victory of the Grand Finals event with Michelle Black and Lisa Duffy of Rochdale G.C. taking a 4 & 3 victory over Orla McGuiness and Kay Farrell from Swords G.C. near Dublin. Following their win Lisa commented, “I can’t say we’ve played our best golf in the final but we’ve dug deep and scrapped. The 9 Hole individual Championship was just as tense with Penn G.C. member Steve Holmes winning 2 & 1 against Flint G.C. member Jason Owen. Upon taking the title Holmes commented, “I played very well. Not as well this afternoon but enough to do the job. It’s been amazing. I’ve met some fantastic people and have been really looked after by everyone at the Belfry and everyone at American Golf.” Watch how well Steve played on his way to the title on Sky Sports 4 on 28th November and on this page shortly after.

SCRATCH
CHAMPIONSHIP

Another new event saw Chris Abbott from Lutterworth Golf Club capitalised on a fantastic opening round of 4 under to take the inaugural Scratch title from Chris Brook of Hinckley Golf Club. Following his great start, Abbott had to dig deep to stay ahead but found enough to take the title. “I’m absolutely delighted. I had a good first round shooting 4 under but the conditions got really tough yesterday afternoon. CHAMPIONSHIP

The Par 3 Championship came to its head to head conclusion when Shaun Mason of the Chase G.C. took the win 4 & 2 from Oxley Park member Paul Stokes on a specially prepared Par 3 course. Upon winning the tournament Mason commented, “I’m really buzzing. You couldn’t relax and play your normal game. It was tough but the course was in mint condition. FAMILY
CHAMPIONSHIP

A new event for 2017, the Family Championship saw Father & Son pair Ian and James Fox from Leyland Golf Club come out on top after beating Droitwich brothers Ian and Alan Gandy 3 & 2. 16 year old James Fox summed up the appeal of this new event when he said, “It was an unreal experience playing with my dad. ADVENTURE GOLF
CHAMPIONSHIP

The Adventure Golf final saw Simon Lee and Steve Gerrish take the win over mini golf experts Richard Gottfried and Peter Jones in a tense final. Simon summed up the reason for running this new event when he said, ”It’s a great way to get people who don’t play golf into the sport. They can come along and have a bit of fun. It was brilliant to see everyone come out today.
