Could Jon Rahm really win the US Open? Lots of people seem to think he can

It was only a year ago when an amateur named Jon Rahm made his way onto the professional golf greens. This year, that same man is one of the hot favourites to win the US Open.

The 22-year-old Spaniard has been in great form, barely putting a foot wrong since shedding his rookie cloak and donning the big pro hat, and now he sits a very respectable 10th in the World Golf Rankings.

His chain of recent results also point to a very promising US Open charge, having secured seven top five finishes on the PGA Tour, including a maiden win in January at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Of course, Jon Rahm isn’t the first young amateur to find themselves in a commanding position at such an early time in their budding career, only for that brightness to fade rather quickly. Justin Rose is a good example of that.

However, Rahm seems to have made an almost seamless transition from rookie to pro, a move which hasn’t gone unnoticed among some of the other top golfers. Such a sharp rise, both in talent and confidence, is sure to unnerve even the most seasoned veteran who goes up against the younger, hungrier lion.

"Jon doesn't have weaknesses," five-time major champion Phil Mickelson said following Rahm's win at Torrey Pines at the beginning of the year.

"Every part of his game is a strength. I think he's more than just a good young player -- I think he's one of the top players in the world."

Rahm, speaking to CNN about his meteoric rise and the very real downfall which could befall him like so many who preceded him, said, "Luckily for me, I've always been someone who likes to play under that pressure -- I like the adversity.

"I like to rise above that because I want to have the most amount of fun. I think that's why every time I've been against the ropes or had to do something, I've been able to do it.

"I think it's just the competitiveness I have in me. I don't like losing, so i just put everything I've got into it."
