AG News: Rose reclaims #1 ranking after Turkish Open win
Justin Rose soared back to the top of the world rankings after edging out Haotong Li in a thrilling finish at the Turkish Airlines Open.
It was supposed to be a turning point in his season, but Rory McIlroy now finds himself in serious peril as elimination from the Irish Open is confirmed.
The Northern Irishman had been hoping to defend his crown at the event, but a second round of 73 on Friday has put paid to that.
Things didn’t get off to the best start on the Thursday, either, when he finished the day level par 72 to leave him one over par for the tournament and way off the pace set by current leader of the USA’s Daniel Im at 13 under.
The scoring thus far at the Irish Open has been low throughout, and with the cut set to be three under par, McIlroy’s hopes of staying in the fight are done and dusted.
Elsewhere, McIlroy’s playing partner Jon Rahm continued his fine week with a 67 on Friday, leaving him 12 under and a stroke behind Im, who also shot 67 on the same day.
